There are, I think, two kinds of situations in which art and artist become inextricable.

One, of course, is when an artist has developed a backstory that is as interesting and as strong as their artwork. This is a relatively recent phenomenon, this cult of personality, and I think it parallels the decline of religion. Art is a place of secular magic, and artists can be seen as shamans - or at least fascinating people who inhabit a world that seems foreign and closed to most people.
